We Oppose Amendment One

The North Carolina AIDS Action Network's Board of Directors has voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to oppose Amendment One.

As an organization that fights for access to health care, we are outraged that public employees would lose access to domestic partnership benefits if this Amendment were to pass.  We fear it would interfere with legal protections for unmarried couples to visit one another in the hospital and make emergency medical decisions if one partner is incapacitated.

More broadly, we're opposed to this attack on the 222,382 unmarried couples across our state who deserve an equal opportunity to protect their loved ones against life's challenges. These include hundreds of NCAAN members who work side-by-side to fight for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.  As a community united in our shared labors and commitments, we band together when our members are under attack.

NCAAN has been working in coalition with Protect ALL NC Families for the past several months to fight this Amendment.  We've made thousands of phone calls to NCAAN supporters across the state educating them about the harms it would cause, and inviting them to volunteer with Protect ALL NC Families in their local communities.

With only two weeks left until the May 8th primary, we're asking everyone for your help to defeat Amendment One.

The single most important way you can help is to VOTE AGAINST Amendment One during the EARLY VOTING period.  One-Stop Early Voting locations are now open across the state.  You can find your nearest early voting location by clicking here.

If you want to vote in this election but are not currently registered to vote, YOU CAN REGISTER AND VOTE at these one-stop early voting locations now through May 5th.  Just click here for details on where to go & what to bring - it's really easy, and your vote MATTERS.  Same-day registration is ONLY available through May 5th!

To learn about other ways you can help, visit Protect ALL NC Families online, where you can find all the information you need to help educate people in all your social networks, from family and friends to faith communities and co-workers, about the harms of Amendment One.

ADAP Watch

As of April 4, 2012 there are:

  • 4,699 individuals enrolled in HIV/AIDS drug assistance programs (ADAP & SPAP)
    • 4,072 are enrolled in ADAP
    • 627 are enrolled in SPAP

As of March 29, 2012 there were:

  • 6,867 individuals enrolled in HIV/AIDS drug assistance programs (ADAP & SPAP)
    • 6,067 are enrolled in ADAP
    • 800 are enrolled in SPAP
  • 176 individuals on the waiting list

The decrease in the number of individuals enrolled in ADAP, SPAP and on the waiting list this week is a result of the end of the annual reauthorization period. The Ryan White/ADAP fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31. Every year all clients enrolled in ADAP, SPAP and on the waiting list are required to reauthorize (reapply for ADAP) if they continue to need medication coverage through ADAP or SPAP or want to maintain their waiting list status. The Annual reauthorization period ended on March 31, 2012. Yesterday’s counts represent all clients who successfully reauthorized by the deadline, new clients added this week and applications submitted this week by clients who missed the reauthorization deadline.

The program remains open to enrollment for applicants with a net income at or below 125% of the federal poverty level.

According to NASTAD’s most recent ADAP Watch, released on March 30, there are 11 states with waiting lists, totaling 3,666 people. That report shows NC as having 170 clients on the waiting list, which was our official count at COB on March 28. At that time, NC made up approximately 4.5% of the national ADAP waiting list. Help Make a Difference

Our Community Organizer, Andrew Porter, needs your help - read below for details!

I’m writing today because I need your help. The next 30 days are critical for HIV/AIDS advocacy in North Carolina. Many important decisions will be made in the state budget process during this time. We expect Governor Perdue to release her budget in this time frame, and we know that the legislature is already at work on their version of the budget. We are encouraging these decision makers to support responsible HIV policies.

On the next four Saturdays we have five huge opportunities to talk to thousands of people across North Carolina and ask them to voice their support for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, HIV prevention programs, and other responsible HIV policies.

To make the most of these events, we need your help. Every volunteer matters and your help makes a difference. For every volunteer that donates an hour of their time, we gain 25 new supporters. Make your voice heard and don't let them take away life saving HIV/AIDS programs by joining us in:

  • Morganton for the Hike for Hope, April 14, shifts from 7am-1pm, 701 Sanford Drive. NCAAN will have a table at Hike Registration.
  • Raleigh, talking to likely supporters in a key legislator's district, April 21, 10am-2pm.
  • Fayetteville for the Dogwood Festival, April 28, shifts from 12pm-7pm.
  • Charlotte for the AIDS Walk on May 5, 8am-11am, Gateway Village Atrium, 800 W. Trade St, Uptown.
  • Raleigh for the AIDS Walk + Ride and OUTRaleigh on May 5, shifts from 9:30am-3:30pm at the corner of Fayetteville and Hargett Streets in Downtown Raleigh. Meet at the NCAAN table.

If you are interested in helping out at one of events above, please click here to sign up. You will be contacted next week with additional details.

In addition, we will continue to have volunteer nights each week in Raleigh and Durham - sign up here, details here:

  • In Raleigh, Tuesday, April 10, at 6:30 pm, we will be phone banking against amendment one at Equality NC's headquarters at 126 E. Hargett St. Cell phones required.
  • In Durham, Thursday, April 12, at 6:30pm, we will be recruiting volunteers for upcoming events and entering postcard data at Democracy NC's headquarters at 1821 Green Street. Laptop required for data entry. Cell phones helpful but not required.

A little bit of your time in April or May can make a huge difference in the future of essential HIV/AIDS programs in North Carolina. I hope to speak with you soon,

Andrew
