Does Rep. Larry Brown make you angry?

By now, you've probably heard State Rep. Larry Brown's statement that the government shouldn't spend money to "help people living in perverted lifestyles" by treating people with HIV who "caused it by the way they live."

It's awful and hurtful when public officials make remarks that perpetuate homophobia and HIV-stigma -- and it’s even worse when we feel like there’s nothing we can do about it.

But now, there is something you can do.

The North Carolina AIDS Action Network has just launched our 2011 legislative advocacy campaign, and we want your help.

Take our Pledge to Protect AIDS Programs.

We’ll let you know about advocacy opportunities that you can participate in from your computer, your home town, and at the state Capitol.

It's easy -- just sign up here.

Together, we’ll make sure that people with HIV and AIDS receive the treatment they need.

Become a North Carolina AIDS Action Network (NCAAN) Intern

The North Carolina AIDS Action Network (NCAAN) is now accepting applications for winter-spring interns!

We have several opportunities available for anyone with a passion for fighting for the rights of people with HIV/AIDS, their loved ones, and those at risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS, who can make a commitment to serve as a NCAAN Intern for at least three months. We cannot offer stipends at this time; however, we gladly work with student interns to tailor an internship experience that counts for course credit or fulfills other academic requirements.

Apply now to fill one of these five exciting posts:

o Communications Internship: Do you have fabulous media skills and a desire to break the media silence about AIDS? If so, we’d love your help. Duties may including helping to develop our website and social networking presence; building a 21st century press list including statewide print, radio, television, and online media contacts; writing blog entries, press releases, and other NCAAN materials; and others projects.

o Community Organizing Internship: Do you have experience building local visibility and grassroots support for a cause you care about? If so, we need you! Help us to build a stronger grassroots presence in your part of North Carolina by working with our staff and local partners on projects such as recruiting local members; developing relationships with campus groups, civic organizations, faith communities, and other potential allies; holding local advocacy events, and increasing NCAAN’s visibility in your region.

o Development Internship: Do you aspire to lead a non-profit organization one day? If so, we’d love a chance to mentor you. Work directly with staff and key board members to sustain our organization by performing such duties as helping to identify and research potential sources of support from foundations, corporations, and individuals; planning and staffing special events; assisting in writing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and grant reports; and strengthening our membership base.

o Policy Advocacy Internship: Do you take it as a compliment when people call you a policy wonk? If so, we’d love to have you join our team. Work with our wonkiest staff and board members to stay on top of relevant policy news; help to develop fact sheets and legislative briefing materials; participate in planning and attending meetings with policy makers; and help in other ways to develop and implement our 2011 policy advocacy agenda.

o Build-It-Yourself Internship: Don’t fit neatly into pre-defined categories? Neither do we—so we appreciate people with a mixture of skills and interests, as long as you bring a passion for fighting for the rights of people with HIV/AIDS, their loved ones, and those at risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS. Use your application to describe the types of skills you bring and the types of duties you want to perform, and if we see a good match we’ll work with you to create a meaningful internship experience that benefits you and the organization.

To apply, simply fill out & submit the form below. (Hint: If you don't see the SUBMIT button at the end of the application, scroll down the form to reach it!)

Review of applications begins immediately! We promise to reply to everyone who applies, so if you don’t hear back from us within a week, please drop a note to lisa@ncaan.org to make sure we received your application.
